Guitar solo | Midnight in a perfect world

When writing and recording takes to songs already out there, you quickly realise the songs you love and the ones you don’t. Having to replay a track at certain points 50 to 60 times whilst writing is the test.

Midnight in a perfect world by DJ shadow is a track purely made from samples (no original takes) and is one of those rare tracks I could listen to on loop. After ideas in the early stages started to work, I wanted to write a guitar line that worked as a standard solo whilst sampling ‘hits’ of guitar effects to fit with the song.

Setting up the Digitech Whammy to drop tune and creating a delay and vibrato effect, I dropped in these effects on certain notes and short phrases as a different approach to a standard guitar solo.

Written over the course of a week and recorded as a one-take, here it is:
